A Leader Should Know How to Manage Failure

Question: Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure?

Sir Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India 's "Rohini" satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.

By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order.

My experts -- I had four or five of them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal . It was a big failure.

That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish Dhawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am, and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India ].

Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed.

Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.

The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, "You conduct the press conference today."

I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience.

Auto Backup

With Windows Live integrating all the users storage needs into one place, Sky drive, I think I have another idea for easing user’s life.

Why not provide facilities to ‘auto-backup’ contents from various other sites! So I, as a user, should be able to click on a checkbox and Live service will take care of backing up my Blog posts to Sky Drive. In case of Google, my blogger posts should be backed up to Google Docs ( or maybe Gmail itself). Not only blogs, but this could be gradually extended to Contacts, Calendar and the services are unlimited.

Safety of Employees in IT Companies..

In recent time, I have heard a lot of news regarding the deaths of IT professionals, more so with female employees. Everybody knows the reasons for it and this post is not here to discuss the problem, but provide solutions.

While I agree many companies have started taking measures to ensure safety of employees, but it still lacks some place or other. Following are my recommendations to all the companies:

1. Make it mandatory for employees to leave early! This option is most widely preached, but this doesn’t solve the problem for IT companies. What if the project requires the employee to stay late for work?

2. Make Cab arrangements for the employees going late. This again is widely adopted solution, but again this is not fool proof and we all know how many cases have happened with the employees traveling through Cab, though less but still there are and we cannot deny that.

So, here is my take, why not provide employees, especially female employees with laptops and ask them to work from home if it gets late. This is very simple solution that will ensure that all employees leave early and yet be available for late working hours. Though I do not deny the fact that infrastructural cost of company would go up investing in ‘so-many’ laptops, but look at the benefits you get from it. Now only safety, but we ensure less of electricity bills, less use of company’s resources!

Don’t you think the cost-benefit analysis here will be fruitful?

There are few companies who have implemented this and let this be the beginning of new safety era.

Saving Energy, Going Green...

Hello people, long time and I have been kept busy with loads of work.

Recently I am planning to purchase a new system and idea overflow is natural to me, so here it is what I thought of…

Computer parts should be able to shut themselves on/off based on requirement to conserve energy. In this age of Global warming one must think and think faster than time to conserve energy. If I have a relatively high-end system that requires ~650 Watts to power CPU, Graphics Card, HDD etc. etc. then why not I should be allowed to cut down on power when I do not require some part’s functionality. For an example if I am not playing games or if I am not working on application that is GC intensive, I should be able to ‘plug-off’ the power to it and still be able to work with a ‘converted low-end system’. This is no big deal, we have seen things with which we can do this, and there we have products like external HDDs which can be unplugged when not required thus contributing to the cause of saving energy. Parts like GCs are power hungry and we do not use them every time we use the system, like while surfing Internet at least not in current days scenario. We have power saving features in monitors, LCD which I am not getting into, those are external to the system.

Some of you might argue that why go for such high-end solutions when you can live without it. Well do you really think that would solve the problem??

Yes, very true! It’s always better to speak out than to remain silent, because by remaining silent you are postponing your talk for the future. And by doing that you are aggregating those thoughts in your mind. By this you would end up in following problems:

1. You are unnecessarily loading your mind with thoughts and already there are many things to take care of on daily basis. So what’s the point in burdening you mind!!

2. At some point of time, the thoughts would become very heavy to carry on, and it would burst out. Not only that, the worst part is, then would “burst out with a bang!”. I am sure nobody would want that.

Why do I relate this to the above quote? This is because, by remaining silent you are more often than not lying to yourself and to the other person.

On the other hand, if you speak up as and when the problem crops up, you are sure not to burden your mind with repetitive thoughts on the topic later on! And, if you think the things would not go well by talking, remember “it is bound to get worst when it gets out with bang!”

If you ask me, I would just say “Sharing thrills, hiding kills!”

Client Interaction Tips

This post is picked up from a mail. I hope this will help my readers in client Interaction as well.

1. Do not write "the same" in an email - it makes little sense to them. Example - I will try to organize the project artifacts and inform you of the same when it is done. This is somewhat an Indian construct. It is better written simply as: I will try to organize the project artifacts and inform you when that is done.

2. Do not write or say, "I have some doubts on this issue". The term "Doubt" is used in the sense of doubting someone - we use this term because in Indian languages , the word for a "doubt" and a "question" is the same. The correct usage (for clients) is: I have a few questions on this issue

3. The term "regard" is not used much in American English. They usually do not say "regarding this issue" or "with regard to this". Simply use, "about this issue".

4. Do not say "Pardon" when you want someone to repeat what they said. The word "Pardon" is unusual for them and is somewhat formal.

5. Americans do not understand most of the Indian accent immediately - They only understand 75% of what we speak and then interpret the rest. Therefore try not to use shortcut terms such as "Can't" or "Don't". Use the expanded "Cannot" or "Do not".

6. Do not use the term "screwed up" liberally. If a situation is not good, it is better to say, "The situation is messed up".

7. As a general matter of form, Indians interrupt each other constantly in meetings - DO NOT interrupt a client when they are speaking. Over the phone, there could be delays - but wait for a short time before responding.

8. When explaining some complex issue, stop occasionally and ask "Does that make sense?". This is preferable than "Do you understand me?"

9. In email communications, use proper punctuation. To explain something, without breaking your flow, use semicolons, hyphens or parenthesis. As an example: You have entered a new bug (the popup not showing up) in the defect tracking system; we could not reproduce it - although, a screenshot would help. Notice that a reference to the actual bug is added in parenthesis so that the sentence flow is not broken. Break a long sentence using such punctuation.

10. In American English, a mail is a posted letter. An email is electronic mail. When you say "I mailed the information to you", it means you sent an actual letter or package through the postal system. The correct usage is: "I emailed the information to you"

11. To "prepone" an appointment is an Indian usage. There is no actual word called prepone. You can "advance" an appointment.

12. The usages "September End", "Month End", "Day End" are not understood well by Americans. They use these as "End of September", "End of Month" or "End of Day".

13. Americans have weird conventions for time - when they say the time is "Quarter Of One", they mean the time is 1:15. Better to ask them the exact time.

14. Indians commonly use the terms "Today Evening", "Today Night". These are not correct; "Today" means "This Day" where the Day stands for Daytime. Therefore "Today Night" is confusing. The correct usages are: "This Evening", "Tonight". That applies for "Yesterday Night" and "Yesterday Evening". The correct usages are: "Last Night" and "Last Evening".

15. When Americans want to know the time, it is usual for them to say, "Do you have the time?". Which makes no sense to an Indian.

16. There is no word called "Updation". You update somebody. You wait for updates to happen to the database. Avoid saying "Updation".

17. When you talk with someone for the first time, refer to them as they refer to you - in America, the first conversation usually starts by using the first name. Therefore you can use the first name of a client. Do not say "Sir". Do not call women "Madam".

18. It is usual convention in initial emails (particularly technical) to expand abbreviations, this way: We are planning to use the Java API For Registry (JAXR). After mentioning the expanded form once, subsequently you can use the abbreviation.

19. Make sure you always have a subject in your emails and that the subject is relevant. Do not use a subject line such as HI.

20. Avoid using "Back". Instead of "Back", Use “ago". Back is the worst word for American.(for Days use "Ago", For hours use "before")

21. Avoid using "but". Instead of "But", Use "However".

22.Avoid using "Yesterday" hereafter use "Last day".

23. Avoid using "Tomorrow" hereafter use "Next day".

Corporate Bandwidth 2.0

With the world moving towards Web2.0, the internet of Video’s, Podcasts, Screencasts and everything in your browser window, the hunger for Bandwidth increases! Corporate world does tackle this problem by curbing the access to ‘unproductive’ resources. Well, that’s right in a way, but the question that arises to my mind is How Long? When are companies going to shift their gears and turn themselves v2.0?

All of the content sharing has shifted to video’s which gives the end-user a better UX. Though there could be much content which could be termed as ‘unproductive’, still one must not forget the other side of the coin which offers vast resource of helpful information.

I would just say, Google search could be used for various ‘unproductive’ search as well, but does that qualify to block Google(or any Search site for that matter) from being used for productive use in corporate world?? I am sure most of us would not even live a day without visiting a search site page (for me Google).

I believe no one would like to keep an employee who sits doing nothing but ‘unproductive’ work? And I feel every employee of any organization would be very well aware of that!

So, I would vote for tackling the Web2.0 world by not blocking access to them, but becoming one of them!

The European Commission has announced an agreement whereby English will be
the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was
the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English
spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in
plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make
the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up
konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the
troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like
fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to
reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments
will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a
deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is
disgrasful and it should go away.

What a match, what a win and what a TEAM!

People the History repeats itself! Yes, it was Kapil’s 11 back in 1983 and now it’s Dhoni’s 11 in 2007. And if you haven’t noticed the numbers game here it’s taken 24 years and 101 days to win the WC on 24^th of September. Ok I am not trying to create a number’s mesh here, neither this should go to create any mail chains explaining the funda behind 9/24 (viz. 9/11). Now back to business, that was an exuberant effort of Team India shown towards one of the most important match (that for me makes an history every time it’s been played between these two sides!), it being a WC Final was another thing! J

Hats off to our young team lead by a bold captain M.S. Dhoni. He has brought in a new hope to the future of Indian cricket.

The team had made that night special for me, for everyone who prayed for their win! Who would have remembered Dravid’s resignation or trimurty (Sachin, Saurav & Dravid) not being a part of the team! It was Dhoni and Team all over the World. With the last over given to Joginder with just 12 runs and Mishbah still at crease, it was like a biggest gamble ever. And then, with only 5 runs to win with 4 balls remaining, the last shot was hit by Misbah, the camera showed the crowd and for a second I felt it was all over! And suddenly coming in the camera was Shreshant who somehow managed to grip the ball into his hands and unleash the glory and excitement! Man, I bet any person who was praying for either of the side would have felt the heartbeat stopped from the moment that reverse shot was played!

Up went the team, and the Indian supporters. What was next, I switched on my PC and the first thing to play was the song… yes you might have guessed it : “Chak De India”. 3000W PMPO speakers had their real test that night and I am glad they stood by it! ;) Danced to the tune of Chak de, wow what a feeling that was. With SRK there in the crowd I just wondered whether he went up to the Team’s dressing room after the first innings and made a speech – “Aaj mai nahi bataunga tumko ki kaise khelna hai. Bees(20) over! Chahe tum jeeto ya haaro, Yeh Bees over tumhare jindagi ke koi nahi cheen sakta tumse! Bas ek hie cheez kehna chahunga mai (pause….) Chak De India” J Talking about this movie, I feel this has changed the way of thinking of many people in India, and now they are leaving up to it.

This victory would be remembered & cherished in the times to come and I feel proud and lucky(not as lucky as SRK) to have watched this match live ON TV J I feel honoured to chant out the words “Bharat Mata Ki Jai!”

India wins the Twenty20 World Cup!!

Sure, you are shocked reading the title. But, that’s the truth! Believe it or not. J

Last night, was the most awaited matches of any international tournament India vs. Pakistan. Yes, what next India started off real bad putting on a total of mere 141 at the down of 9 wickets.

Expectations that Sehwag would thrive for excellence proving the selectors wrong in removing him from the 50-50 team, was shattered once again! Oh boy, when he was out in that same old legacy style of his, I just thought, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for him to apply for a copyright on that.

Nevertheless, they had a plea for this being the first match of tournament for them, they were rusty (just like Aussies). What the heck this was the First and Last match for them!

Seeing the figures technically , I thought it was time for me to go to bed. But, India vs. Pakistan! Will the Pakistani’s break the record by winning this match? More worse, will they win in within 14 overs sending the Indians back on flight to India? C’mon get back home losing any team, but Pakistan guys!

Indian bowlers showed a good temperament and Pakistan was got into pressure later in the stage. What else could be expected then the match to go live wire till the last over. The hopes of Indians winning/losing constantly kept on shifting from over to over, bowl to bowl.

And there came the last over, bowl to bowl competition. The last two bowls remained and the match was tied. Now it was a mixed feeling, happy that India would be through to the next round and sad coz. Pakistan would win ( just one run to get now)!! But, alas the last bowl was bowled and to my shock the score card looked India – 141/9 and Pakistan- 141/7. Oh my God! The match has tied, the record is still not broken. It was 1 o’clock in the night and I was jumping with joy. J

Finally came in the new funda of breaking the tie to decide the winner. Yes, the Penalty shootouts! Oops, that was Bowl out!

And, the final score said India has won the match with 3-0! 3-0, where are the goals? When did India start playing football? Who cared!! It were Sehwag, Bhajji and Uttahpa, the ultimate “Goal” scorers for the team! J

Wow! What a match it was. My decision of not to sleep was perfect(Hey BCCI! I can be one of your boards, what say?J), Aakhir Dil Hai Hindustani!

It was a WC finals victory for me! Team you are not going to be put on flight back to India! You still hold the WC victory record against Pakistan Good! You guys have rocked! Good work Dhoni & Team! Chak De India!

Fresh Fish

The Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the waters close to Japan have not held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther than ever. The farther the fishermen went, the longer it took to bring in the fish. If the return trip took more than a few days, the fish were not fresh. The Japanese did not like the taste.
To solve this problem, fishing companies installed freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and freeze them at sea. Freezers allowed the boats to go farther and stay longer. However, the Japanese could taste the difference between fresh and frozen and they did not like frozen fish. The frozen fish brought a lower price. So fishing companies installed fish tanks.
They would catch the fish and stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin. After a little thrashing around, the fish stopped moving. They were tired and dull, but alive. Unfortunately, the Japanese could still taste the difference.
Because the fish did not move for days, they lost their fresh-fish taste.

The Japanese preferred the lively taste of fresh fish, not sluggish fish. So how did Japanese fishing companies solve this problem? How do they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan? To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishing companies (still) put the fish in the tanks. But now they add a small shark to each tank. The shark eats a few fish, but most of the fish arrive in a very lively state.

He gives the lady customer her balance amount of Rs.20/- and she leaves the shop. A short while after she leaves, the other shopkeeper approaches him complaining that the Rs.100/- note he gave him was fake. After an argument, the shopkeeper finally takes back that Rs. 100/- fake note and returns the same amount of money to the other shopkeeper.

Before I start writing this, thanks to all my managers out here in Persistent who by their experience say few things which become a "Point to Remember" to me, for effective communication with Client-
Let me mention few I remember -

1. Take a note of even minutest of the discussion with your client or any party related to client.
2. Always mail these discussion details to all the parties involved i.e. your company's team, the client and related parties.
3. This mail should not show the discussion points as "warning mesages", meaning it should not sound "leagal" when read, though, it ofcourse could save you many leagal complications if it has to happen later on!
4. The mail, if possible, should mention the names of the person who has made a statement that you are mentioning with proper reasoning of the statement.

Today is the day I would never forget in my life :(
Not because it was great, but this time somethings prove terribly wrong for me!!
Had a good start to the day, One of my favourite movie had it's another version out.. yes I'm talking about Die Hard 4.0. Was expected to be there at E-sqaure by this time and probably would have been half way through the movie :( Aah! I hate to say that I have missed the first ever movie show of my life and had to "tear" the tickets to stop some "tears" in mine as well as others life!! "Die Hard 4.0 is calling" .. umm no more :..(

This all seems so absurd to me talking out loud. But I'm doing this because no body else falls into such traps. It has already been me, I wish it's no one else anymore.

So, what is all this crap about..
Orkut, yes most of us have many friends who are linked through orkut, not only friends it's relatives, your elder/younger brothers/ sisters and who not!!

Most of us who are using Orkut would be aware of the security loop holes it has! Well you might have gussed it by now! Sadly, I was a victim of this today!

There were some obscene communities added to my list of communites and one of my ****** got an eye on it!! What next, that person straight away started doubting! Man I was shocked[almost 2000V] to hear that! The person being unaware of the facts about orkut security loop holes, is giving me a hard time to explain my genuineness!! Well I have digged the whole of net to find out facts about the same and it was Wikipedia, who seems to have come to my rescue! Found something relating to crappy stuff on the link and straight away mailed to the person.

Leaving the pain, it has caused me aside, I just want to appeal to all my readers..
Please do not take sites like orkut or fun mails to judge a person's character. They are there to give you .00001%[I wish, that zero's could go till infinity] of information about what the person is! Most of them are there to just have a laugh at it while reading!!

Some thoughts that come to my mind right away -

-When in doubt, just take the next small step.
-Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
-However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
-It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
-Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
-Try to the best of your abilities, be it in professional or personal life.

P.S. - Please forgive me for being blunt in this post. No second thoughts are attached to it...
It's just what is coming to my mind at present.

Oh and Btw, you would not find any of those links [at present, I cannot gurantee the future] on my community any more.

Let me not start giving you gyan on how to manage your work etc. etc... and straight away get to the point. Here is an example of what I mean -

You are a developer and one of the most boring task could be to support your work with good commenting! I have to prepare a sample application for a web control I have created, now every line I write must accompany with some comment, right! I am trying to show a demo of a Message Box control I had created (Yes, I have :) ) Now just to bring up the box I created a scenario for divide by zero exception and show the same in "My Message Box" (Good Idea!) But now that I am not using a good coding practice to bluntly generate the exception, I must comment it. How do I go about it:

"The following code is not advisable in a real-time scenario. This has potential performance implications, blah blah blah.."

Nah! boring.. Let me make it KISS (Keep It Short Stupid! and what where you thinking ;))

"Disclaimer: Do not try the following four LOCs at home!"

Yes, doesn't this convey what it should. It brings a smile on your face while writing it, and surely would bring a smile to the face of the developer who is trying to use you control and is bored with long long steps and comments to start using the control.

So, you saw the message conveyed what is should have and bought smiles to many faces. However, remember this should not always be the case. Sometimes you need to be serious afterall :| (Must you? :P). This can be implemented while writing documentations or mails, articles as well, use smileys at right point of time and place to bring smiles to readers' face and not with the intentions to mock you reader.

I like to use it more often than not, and surely remember the last point while doing it!

Normal goes Fast!!!

Wondering what the title means! Read on...

Normally my group goes in for lunch @ 1pm. Since today was Monday, the first counter from back entrance contained 'Fast' Food ( Not the 'Fast' as in Junk, but the food for fasting :) ). When we were there one of the vegetable bowl was empty!! (the other one was obiviously not edible as usual) Lunch time here starts @ 12pm and lasts till 2.30pm.

Yes you thinking it right, "So early... WTH!!"

More astonishingly, the section for 'Fast' food had its each and every bowl filled up till brim!! [Reason, as we saw it to be, being "Sabka Bandhu", as we call the person was fasting today. :) ]

And did you note the irony - On one hand Fasting food was available in abundance and on other Non-Fasting had it's counter closed!
And till date I was under impression Fasting meant "Not to Eat!!". I really wonder who was fasting!!

Those were the Malgudi Days where children like me had fun with Mogli and family liked watching Surabhi. At times we thought like detectives with Byomkesh Bakshi and at other time we were feeling like holding The sword of Tipu Sultan. Not to forget the evergreen Mahabharat. Those Disney Duck Tales always was very less to satisfy our entertainment senses and left with a want for more and more! and finally the only two-wheeler ad ( I guess so :)), Hamara Bajaj...

Have'nt you started missing that masti badly yet. Is your mind not singing one of the serial's tune? I know, I know, we all miss that. Isn't it like Mile sur mera tumhara, toh sur bane hamara...

Well, I was watching this weekend and suddenly came up this ad, it said, ofcourse, "Now watch Spiderman 3 in Bhojpuri and Tamil" and then started of with the Bhojpuri Trailers!

And there's one dialog where Spiderman's(Tobey Maguire) Gal (Kirsten Dunst) says to him "I'm worried about you!" and guess what translate it to Bhojpuri - "Humka tohar Phikarwa" was the dialog she said. Though the movie is really bad rated according to me(2/5), it would be a real fun to watch the same again in Bhojpuri! :) ( Not Tamil, I would'nt understand it a bit ;) )

One of my favourite, picked up from a mail

Dear Tech Support Team:

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 5.0 to Wife 1.0.

I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child-processes that took up a lot of space and valuable resources.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all other system activities.

Applications such as BachelorNights 10.3, Cricket 5.0, BeerWithBuddies 7.5, and Outings 3.6 no longer runs, crashing the system whenever selected. I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my favorite applications.

I'm thinking about going back to Girlfriend 5.0 , but the 'uninstall'
doesn't work on Wife 1.0.

Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 5.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program.

Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!!

It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 5.0.

It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed.

You cannot go back to Girlfriend 5.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed not to allow this. (Look in your Wife 1.0 Manual under Warnings-Alimony-Child
Support) .

I recommend that you keep Wife1.0 and work on improving the environment.

I suggest installing the background application "Yes Dear" to alleviate software augmentation.

The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE because ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system will return to normal anyway.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as Clean 2.5, Sweep 3.0, Cook
1.5 and DoLaundry 4.2. However, be very careful how you use these programs.
Improper use will cause the system to launch the program NagNag 9.5 . Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I recommend Sarees 2.1 and Jewellery 5.0

WARNING: DO NOT, under any circumstances, install SecretaryWithShortSkirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

Case: Company vs. Employees

Statement: Most of the IT companies implement proxy filtering softwares to increase the so-called productive time of the employees and ultimately the Company itself. But does this have the desired effect???

The Judge: Order Order... ( Hearing Starts!)

Defense: Argument For (Company's Lawyer)
- This helps the internet bandwidth to be "only" utilized for "productive" activity.
- This helps employees to concentrate "only" on work related activities.
- Most of the time user spends on Social Networking sites and Media streaming sites.
- The Deliveries could be delayed due to "un" productive work.
- How about the adult content that one streams in the office?

Offense: Argument Against ( Employees' Lawyer)
-The performance doesn't improve much as the request now pass through the proxy software and this slows the surfing speed as well as surfing experience further.
- Does an employee always concentrate on the work the whole day anyway? All work and no play switches a person's mind to Hibernation.
- Blocking social networking site cuts software professional from a society and makes computer his/her only friend.
- Blocking online video sites like YouTube doesn't necessarily increase your productivity. Most of the online free training content by experts are shared on such sites and ultimately media streaming sites are becoming mode of information exchange. Hence, the company is depriving it's employees of some fruitfull content that could have increased their productivity and enabled them to complete a task in less R&D time required otherwise. Every person is not an Einstine to keep on inventing!!
- Ok, the deliveries could be delayed!! Do you keep a person who doesn't work & produce results in time anyway? If you do keep then you have lots of money to spare, buy some extra bandwidth with it!!
- Hmm.. Adult Content! Good Question. Why not apply filter on Adult Content rather than all the sites! Track the individuals down, as the number of such cases would be bare minimum.

SKOAR! Gaming Expo

I being a Gamer myself and a big fan of SKOAR! Mag., luckily got a chance to visit Pragati Maidan, Delhi on 26th -27th of January.
Well, the fact being this was my first ever chance to visit a "Gaming Expo", I was quite excited to be there, and was not much impressed with the organization of the same!!
The show maker for me was the "XBox!" display. I like the damn piece and wish to own one soon. Rest there was CS:CZ and some other games hosted by many to try your hands on.
In one line "SKOAR!!, you missed the ROAR that you very well show in your mags.!" Be better, best next time :)

Milestone Two and Lucky 22

Ok, Right Back after exactly 2 months. I guess the number 22nd is turning out to be very very lucky for me.
Well, earlier it was an award and now it's turn for "Reward". If you couldn't guess it till now, let me disclose it: "Aahhaa! Jiska mujhe tha intazar, my first salary increment. I just have one word - Wow!!!"

I was feeling low these days, due to some problems with my room mates (not friends to me any more). To add on to this, I got sick with all sorts of health problems, just saw a physician yesterday. And, in the evening just before snacks time, my super boss, Siddhesh drops me a mail saying "Can you please drop by " and I was like what has happened. When I meet him, he handed me the letter and .......

"Congrats Aditya!" - you have done it again.

Just one more thing to add, this appraisal was due from the company as it was under paying all it's employees and had decided to revise it for all the deserving candidates.

Hmm.. Today the day was MINE

22nd of Sept, 2006 :
This day was really great for me.

I received +ve remarks from my boss and my super-boss. Not only this I was appraised by a certificate proof for my work. Well ofcourse not monetary, but such motivations play an important role in my life.
After all hardship I went through in my internship, I am finally happy to have this acknowledgement. This is my first appraisal in my professional life and I am really excited about it. It's given me strength to carry on.
I have just made one statement which fits appropriate for my situation

"Impossible has always transformed to I'm Possible. It's just the transition, for some cases, that took longer"

Thanks to all my well-wishers, but mostly Kaushik (my boss) who showed faith in me and gave me the responsibility of the work.

Well!! I have a long list, but let me just stick to one of those which is effectively inculcated into my career path now. Yes, you have guessed that right(if you have), It's the COMP!!
Ok here's a secret about me now : I have a huge collection of GAMES, SONGS, SOFTWARES ( Around 500+ CD's and DVD's). I carry almost all of my collection every where I go. By the way, the Pic here shows my passion about computers, I can live without food but not this box ( lol.. jus kiddin.. I do take eating breaks..)
